The power to hold on in spite of everything, is the winners quality. Persistence is the ability to face defeat again and again without giving up. Your greatest successes almost invariably come one step beyond the point where everything inside of you says to quit.
H. Rose Perot, said "Most people give up just when they are about to achieve success. They quit on the one-yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game, one foot away from the winning touchdown."
Herodotus also wrote, "Some men give up their designs when they have almost reached the goal, while others on the contrary obtain a victory by exerting at the last moment more vigorous efforts than ever before."
You find this principle of persistence in the life and work of countless great men and women. Florence Scovel Shinn wrote that, "Every great work, every big accomplishment has been brought into manifestation through holding to the vision and often just before the big achievement comes apparent failure and discouragement."
Napoleon Hill equally wrote that, "Before success comes in any man's life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat and perhaps some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is quit. And that is exactly what the majority of people do."
Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, also wrote these words, "Never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn."
What you do not see, what most people never suspect of existing, is the silent but irresistible power that comes to your rescue when you fight on in the face of discouragement.
Furthermore, Claude M. Bristol wrote, "It's the constant and determined effort that breaks down all resistance, sweeps away all obstacles."
Moreso, James Whitcomb Riley put it this way, "The most essential factor is persistence-the determination never to allow your energy or enthusiasm to be dampened by the discouragement that must inevitably come."
I will conclude with this poem called, "Don't Quit." Everyone should read, memorise and recite it any time he or she is tempted to quit or to stop trying.
Don't Quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will.
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill
When the funds are low and the debts are high.
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about.
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don't give up though the pace seems slow.
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out.
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit.
It's when things seem worst that you must not QUIT.
Thanks for reading and God bless.
